Lightning Risk analysis

Lightning risk analysis helps to understand the level of danger a building may face from lightning. At BLITZS, this study is carried out according to the international standard IEC 62305-2. The assessment considers factors such as the building location, height and size, type of structure (factory, hospital, office, etc.), number of occupants, and the electrical and electronic systems used. Based on this information, the actual lightning risk level is calculated and a clear report is prepared. The report explains how the risk was determined, the required protection level, recommended Lightning Protection System (LPS), surge protection needs, and practical protection solutions. This process helps protect buildings and people, prevent equipment damage, reduce financial loss, and meet safety and project approval requirements while ensuring the project receives the right level of protection without unnecessary cost.

Basic LPS Design

Basic Lightning Protection System (LPS) Design is the next step after completing the lightning risk study. The system is designed according to the international standard IEC 62305-3. Even when only limited project details are available, a simple and practical design can be prepared. This includes selecting the suitable type of lightning protection system, positioning of air terminals (lightning rods), routing of down conductors, proper earthing arrangement, and basic surge protection recommendations. The design also provides an estimated bill of materials, required material quantities, a simple layout drawing, and a typical system configuration. This helps project teams clearly understand the protection concept, estimate the project cost early, plan materials and installation, and proceed with consultant or client approval for the lightning protection system.

Surge Protection

Surge Protection – Detailed SPD Design protects electrical and electronic systems from lightning surges. Lightning can damage electrical panels, machines, computers, CCTV, and control systems. To prevent this, BLITZS designs Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) according to the international standard IEC 62305-4. After the lightning risk study, a detailed SPD design is prepared using full project information. This includes studying the main electrical panels, sub-panels, generator and UPS systems, data and communication lines, sensitive equipment, cable routing, and building layout. The building is divided into protection zones, and the correct SPD type (Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3) is selected and placed in the proper location with correct coordination, earthing, and bonding. The design also provides a clear bill of materials, exact SPD ratings, quantities, and proper documentation. This approach helps protect equipment, reduce downtime, lower repair costs, and ensure compliance with international standards, keeping electrical systems safe even during severe lightning conditions.

Earthing System

Soil Resistivity Testing is used to understand how well the soil can carry electrical current. This test is very important when designing a safety earthing grid and when a high level of lightning protection is required, such as LPL I or LPL II defined in IEC 62305. Different soils like dry soil, rocky soil, and wet soil have different resistance, so proper measurement is needed before designing the earthing system. At the site, special equipment is used in a method called electrical soil sounding, where probes are inserted into the ground and electrical current is passed through the soil to take readings at different depths. From these measurements, engineers determine the soil resistivity value, soil layer condition, and the best depth for earth electrodes. This data helps design an accurate earthing system, select the correct conductor size, decide the number and depth of earth pits, and ensure safe step and touch voltage limits. Proper soil testing removes guesswork and ensures safe, reliable, and standard-compliant earthing design.

Lightning Consulting

Lightning Protection Consulting helps ensure that buildings and electrical systems are properly protected from lightning and fault currents. BLITZS provides expert guidance to help clients select the right lightning protection and earthing system for their projects. Our team advises on proper installation methods, correct material selection, suitable protection levels, earthing and bonding requirements, and surge protection needs. We make sure every system follows important standards such as IEC 62305 and IS 3043, along with project safety requirements. BLITZS also supports clients during the design stage, installation stage, and inspection or approval stage to ensure the system is installed correctly and performs reliably. The goal is to deliver a safe, effective, and standards-compliant lightning and earthing protection system for every project.

Lightning Protection Design

Lightning Protection System (LPS) Design provides a complete and accurate protection plan for a building after the lightning risk analysis is finished. The design follows the international standard IEC 62305-3 and uses full project information such as building drawings, roof layout, structure height, electrical and mechanical systems, and site conditions. Based on this data, a detailed design is prepared that shows the exact placement of air terminals (lightning rods), the protection method used (rolling sphere, mesh, or protection angle), routing of down conductors, earthing system layout, bonding details, and coordination with surge protection. The design also includes a clear bill of materials with exact quantities, conductor sizes, detailed layout drawings, connection details, and full documentation. This helps achieve consultant and authority approval, plan installation correctly, avoid material shortages or extra costs, and ensure full compliance with standards, providing safe and reliable lightning protection for the project.

Maintenance

Lightning Protection Maintenance is important to keep the lightning and earthing system safe and reliable over time. Connections can become loose, corrosion may occur, and system performance can reduce if regular checks are not done. BLITZS provides yearly inspection and audit services to ensure the system is working properly. During inspection, the full lightning protection system is checked, earthing connections are inspected, earth resistance is tested using calibrated equipment, and conductors, lightning rods, bonding points, and surge protection devices are visually examined. The maintenance follows the guidance of IEC 62305 to ensure proper safety and compliance. After the inspection, a clear report with test results, photos if required, and repair recommendations is provided, along with a compliance certificate where applicable. Regular maintenance helps maintain safety, prevent unexpected failures, protect equipment, and meet insurance and safety requirements.

Site Assessment

Protection Site Assessment is carried out to check whether an existing lightning or earthing system is working safely and correctly. BLITZS sends trained specialists to the project site to inspect the current lightning protection system, examine earthing connections and their condition, test system performance, and identify any damage, corrosion, or loose connections. The team also reviews whether the system complies with current standards such as IEC 62305. After the inspection, a clear report is provided with test results, photos if required, a list of issues found, and practical recommendations to improve the system. If necessary, upgrades are suggested so the system meets the latest safety requirements. This assessment helps improve safety, prevent system failure, meet project and insurance requirements, and extend the life of the lightning protection system.

Lightning Protection Installation

Lightning Protection Installation must be carefully planned because every building has different conditions and requirements. BLITZS studies important factors such as the type of building, local lightning conditions, hazardous areas like oil, gas, or chemical zones, sensitive electronic equipment, soil condition and corrosion level, and even the appearance of the structure. Based on this information, the lightning protection system is installed using suitable materials and correct methods while following the guidelines of IEC 62305-3. The installation ensures hazardous areas are safely protected, electronic systems are secured from lightning effects, and the overall system is neat and professional in appearance. The main aim is to deliver a safe installation, reliable long-term performance, and full compliance with safety standards.

LPS Safety Certificate

An LPS Safety Certificate is issued after the lightning protection system is fully installed and inspected. A qualified inspector checks whether the system follows the requirements of IEC 62305. During the inspection, important items such as the installation of air terminals, routing of down conductors, earthing system performance, bonding connections, and overall compliance with standards are carefully verified. If the system meets all safety and technical requirements, the LPS Safety Certificate is issued to confirm that the installation is correct and compliant with international standards. This certificate gives confidence to the building owner, supports consultant approval, helps meet insurance requirements, and provides official proof of safety compliance for authorities.
